Community Support
“It Takes A Whole Village To Raise A Child”
– African Proverb
At Ethandweni, we do what we can to maintain close links with the community that surrounds us. We offer community support by providing:
- Pre-schooling – A pre-school with up to 72 children enrolled from 3-6 years of age coming from nearby villages (within walking distance). There are 3 teachers, all of which are trained and provided by the government. It is run as a community project with its own parent-elected committee.
- The eye project – Run from the home for local residents to have their eyes tested and to provide those in need with reading spectacles.
- Transportation – Assisting our local nurses with transport and resources to carry out a monthly ‘outreach clinic’. Getting treatment to those who do not live within walking distance of the clinic.
- The workshop – We provide basic repairs to equipment such as wheelbarrows, scotch carts, axes, bicycles and pots. These day-to-day items are expensive for the local people to replace. We charge token prices which can sometimes in the form of groceries such as potatoes!
- Dam and Electricity – The local community has also benefited from the dam and electricity power line built for Ethandewni.
Simply, working and supporting our community ensures that true progress is made for everyone!
