Ethandweni Children’s Home

“There can be no keener revelation of a societies soul than the way in which it treats our children”
– Nelson Mandela

Accommodation

Ethandweni Children’s Home accommodates up to 48 children on its 16-hectare communal land premises in White Water, Matopo area, Zimbabwe.

There are 4 gender-appropriate units, each of which is under the loving care and guidance of one of our supportive ‘Mothers’ (we call them ‘Mothers’ because of the close relationship they have with the children). All bedrooms are fully equipped to create a warm, safe and secure environment for our children.

Nutrition and Healthcare

Nutrition & Health Care

Often, the children arrive at Ethandweni malnourished, sick and traumatised. As such, we place nutritional health and well-being as a top priority. We give the Children 3 well-balanced meals that are prepared in our central kitchen. The general health of the children is monitored through regular check-ups and if more in-depth treatment is required, the child is taken to Bulawayo for further treatment.

Education

With children from new born to 18 years old, we place a special focus on education giving each and every child a chance to excel in school. Our children attend local primary and secondary schools which provides them both with a seamless transition and ensures excessive travel is kept to an absolute minimum.

Psychosocial Support

Psychosocial Support

The support of our children extends beyond the physical and we place appropriate emphasis on a child’s emotional and psychological well-being. The majority of our children have been afflicted by some form of trauma and ongoing counselling from our caring Mothers helps to rebuild and reinforce the character of each individual child. The Mothers provide each child with the space to work through their challenges in a safe and confidential environment.

Spiritual Development

We provide spiritual development as part of a holistic approach to the upbringing of our children. This is anchored in 5 basic human values:

  • Truth
  • Love
  • Peace
  • Right Conduct
  • Non-violence
